Items and equipment
Ocarina of Time has 24 slots of items (from the Deku Stick and Fairy Slingshot to the Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, three magic spells and four Bottles) plus equipment: four swords, three shields, three tunics, three pairs of boots and upgrades for bags, wallets, strength and diving. Most main items come from dungeons; the Nintendo Switch 2 remake adds quick item switching and an item slot on ZR.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time splits Link's gear into items, which he uses from a button (the Deku Stick, Fairy Slingshot, Bombs, Boomerang, Fairy Bow and its magic arrows, Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, Lens of Truth, three spells, the ocarina and four Bottles), and equipment, which he wears: four swords, three shields, three tunics, three pairs of boots and the upgrades that hold more ammunition and Rupees or let him lift and dive further. Nearly every main item is found in a dungeon and then opens the way to the next. In Nintendo's gameplay demonstration of the Nintendo Switch 2 remake (Sep 8, 2026), Eiji Aonuma opens the new equipment screen on Young Link, with the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, and says Link's "outfit and equipment have also been redone". The remake, due Nov 5, 2026, keeps the original's items, as far as Nintendo has shown.

The Weird Egg, Zelda's Letter, the masks and the adult trading items sit in one shared slot; Biggoron's Sword and trading quests follows that chain, and Side quests, masks and minigames covers the masks.
The remake changes how items are used, not which items there are. Aonuma, facing a Skulltula in the Deku Tree, says "Just like recent games in the series, you can swap between items with a single button", and aims the Fairy Slingshot with motion controls; the targeting button lets him "aim pretty quickly and fire". The press after the Sep 8, 2026 Direct described an item assigned to ZR and swapped from a pop-up menu (Anime News Network), and Nintendo UK says weapons and items are swapped on the fly.
Swords and shields
Ocarina of Time has four swords. Child Link finds the Kokiri Sword in a chest in Kokiri Forest's training area, and draws the Master Sword in the Temple of Time to become an adult; the Master Sword is the only blade that can deal Ganon's final blow (Bosses). The two-handed swords come from Death Mountain: as Zelda Dungeon's guide of Oct 20, 2009 shows, Medigoron sells the Giant's Knife for 200 Rupees, a blade that "does twice as much damage as the Master Sword" but leaves no hand for a shield, and breaks after a few uses. Biggoron's Sword has the same strength and never breaks; it is the reward of the adult trading quest.
The three shields are the Deku Shield (40 Rupees in the Kokiri Shop; it burns), the Hylian Shield (sold in Castle Town and Kakariko's Bazaars, or found in a grave in Kakariko Graveyard) and the Mirror Shield from the Spirit Temple, which reflects light and magic and is needed against Twinrova. Like Liked swallow shields and tunics, so Link has to buy them back.
In the remake, GameSpot noticed in Nintendo's footage (Sep 10, 2026) that the Megaton Hammer, which in the original smashed down or swung to one side, now swings in both directions, and that shields block more: Link takes an Iron Knuckle's axe strike on his shield and reflects a Beamos laser with the Mirror Shield, "both which were impossible before".
Tunics and boots
The Goron Tunic (red) and Zora Tunic (blue) let adult Link survive heat and water. The Goron Tunic comes from Darunia's son in Goron City (or the Goron Shop) and is needed in Death Mountain Crater and the Fire Temple. The Zora Tunic comes from King Zora once Link thaws him with Blue Fire (it is also sold in Zora's Domain). As HaskieGaming's prep guide of Nov 16, 2025 explains, underwater with the Kokiri or Goron Tunic a timer runs down and Link drowns when it ends; with the Zora Tunic he can stay at the bottom of Lake Hylia or the Water Temple as long as he likes.
The Iron Boots, found in the Ice Cavern, make Link sink and stand on the bottom, and the Water Temple asks for them again and again. On the Nintendo 64 they are worn from the equipment screen, so each change means pausing; Ocarina of Time 3D made both pairs of boots into items for its buttons.
The Hover Boots are the Shadow Temple's item, found early in that dungeon. HaskieGaming's guide of Sep 20, 2024 describes how they work: run off a ledge and, instead of falling, Link hovers in the air for a moment, long enough to cross short gaps.
The remake fixes the pause. IGN, studying Nintendo's footage for its list of 40 changes (Sep 12, 2026), found four empty slots on the new equipment screen that sit on the up and down directional buttons, and a clip on Nintendo's Japanese site of Link putting on the Iron Boots in the Water Temple with the down button, without a menu. IGN also saw a bigger starting wallet: the remake's wallet showed a maximum of 200 Rupees, where the Nintendo 64's first wallet holds 99.
The other shortcut holds a redesigned Lens of Truth. Zeltik (Sep 9, 2026) found only two clips with an item on the up button: a pair of purple goggles with the Eye of Truth on each lens, which Link puts on rather than holding up a magnifying glass as in the original. Zelda Wiki already lists an unnamed remake item "that resembles a Sheikah-style pair of goggles". Nintendo has not named it as of Oct 14, 2026.
Upgrades
Upgrades raise what Link can carry or do, and they come from minigames, people and collectibles as much as from dungeons.
| Upgrade | Steps | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet | 99, then 200 (Adult's Wallet), then 500 Rupees (Giant's Wallet) | House of Skulltula, for 10 and 30 tokens (Gold Skulltulas) |
| Bullet Bag | 3 sizes | Inside the Deku Tree, then shooting games for child Link |
| Quiver | 3 sizes | Forest Temple, then the Kakariko shooting gallery and horseback archery |
| Bomb Bag | 3 sizes | Dodongo's Cavern, then Goron City and Bombchu Bowling |
| Strength | Goron's Bracelet, Silver Gauntlets, Golden Gauntlets | Darunia; the Spirit Temple; Ganon's Castle |
| Diving | Silver Scale, Golden Scale | Zora's Domain diving game; the Lake Hylia Fishing Pond (adult) |
| Magic | Magic Meter, then a double meter | Great Fairy of Power (Death Mountain Trail), Great Fairy of Wisdom (Death Mountain Crater) |
| Defense | Doubled defense | Great Fairy of Courage, outside Ganon's Castle |
| Hearts | 3 to 20 | Heart Containers and Pieces of Heart |
The Silver Scale shows how one upgrade leads to the next. In HaskieGaming's guide of Nov 12, 2025, child Link wins it from the diving game at the top of Zora's Domain, dives through an underwater passage that he could not reach before, comes up in Lake Hylia, and takes from the lakebed a Bottle with a letter in it: Ruto's Letter, which moves King Zora aside and opens the way to Jabu-Jabu.
Magic and Great Fairies
The three spells are gifts of the Great Fairies, whom Link summons by standing on the Triforce mark in a hidden fountain and playing Zelda's Lullaby. HaskieGaming's guide of Nov 18, 2025 calls Din's Fire "a huge area of effect" attack that sends out a giant fireball around Link; Farore's Wind sets and returns to a warp point inside a dungeon, and Nayru's Love surrounds Link with a crystal barrier that blocks damage for a while. All three, and the magic arrows, spend the green Magic Meter, which Link only has after visiting the Great Fairy on Death Mountain Trail. Side quests, masks and minigames lists every fountain.
Bottles
Ocarina of Time has four Bottles, and each is a small quest:
- Kakariko Village: the Cucco Lady gives one to child Link for catching her seven Cuccos.
- Lon Lon Ranch: child Link wins one, full of Lon Lon Milk, from Talon's Cucco game (Epona and Lon Lon Ranch).
- Lake Hylia: Ruto's Letter in a Bottle, which Link keeps after showing it to King Zora.
- Hyrule Castle Town: the Poe Collector gives one for ten Big Poes, adult only.
A Bottle holds Red, Green and Blue Potions, Lon Lon Milk, a fairy (which revives Link when his hearts run out), bugs, a fish, Blue Fire or a Poe. The remake's inventory screen has five slots in its bottom row, which IGN wondered about since the original has four Bottles; Nintendo has not explained it as of Oct 14, 2026.
