Great Fairy Fountains
Ocarina of Time has six Great Fairy Fountains. Three Great Fairies teach spells (Din's Fire at Hyrule Castle, Farore's Wind at Zora's Fountain, Nayru's Love at the Desert Colossus), and three give upgrades (the Magic Meter and Spin Attack on Death Mountain Trail, double magic in Death Mountain Crater, double defense outside Ganon's Castle). Each is behind a hidden entrance and appears when Link plays Zelda's Lullaby.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has six Great Fairy Fountains, each hidden behind a wall or rock that Link has to break, and each Great Fairy appears when he plays Zelda's Lullaby on the Triforce mark in front of her pool. Three of them teach magic spells, Din's Fire, Farore's Wind and Nayru's Love; the other three give the Magic Meter with an upgraded Spin Attack, a doubled Magic Meter and doubled defense. PGReviews' retrospective of the Nintendo 64 game sums them up the same way: the Great Fairies "get you the upgraded Spin Attack and Magic meter, a defense upgrade in the game's last hour", plus the three spells. Nintendo has not shown the fountains in the Nintendo Switch 2 remake (Nov 5, 2026), as of Oct 20, 2026, so the list below is the original's.

The guide publisher GameWith (updated Aug 23, 2026) and TheGamer's guide (Aug 24, 2020) agree on these places and gifts. Bombs come from the Bomb Bag in Dodongo's Cavern, so the first two fountains open as soon as that dungeon is done. The spells themselves are described on Items and equipment, and every other optional errand on Side quests, masks and minigames.
Death Mountain Trail: the Magic Meter
The first Great Fairy most players meet lives at the top of Death Mountain Trail, behind a cracked wall that young Link opens with a bomb. HaskieGaming's guide shows the visit late, as adult Link, breaking the wall with the hammer instead, then playing Zelda's Lullaby: "There it is. Magic. That green bar." He notes that Darunia and Navi both point Link to this fairy from Dodongo's Cavern on. She gives Link the Magic Meter and, in TheGamer's words, will "upgrade his spin attack". GameWith advises carrying the Hylian Shield on the trail, where rocks fall from the volcano.
The Magic Meter matters more than any spell: the Lens of Truth, the three spells and the magic arrows all spend it. Without it Link cannot use the Lens of Truth from the Bottom of the Well, which the Shadow Temple all but requires, or the Light Arrows that break the barriers in Ganon's Castle.
Hyrule Castle: Din's Fire
The Great Fairy of Magic near Hyrule Castle teaches Din's Fire. HaskieGaming fetches it on the way to the Shadow Temple, because the temple's entrance needs it: "a boulder over here, and we're just going to use the bombs that we collected from Dodongo's Cavern", then Zelda's Lullaby on the Triforce mark. He describes the spell as "a huge area of effect... Spawns a giant fireball", and GameWith as a dome of fire around Link. Get it as young Link: in the adult era the castle grounds become Ganon's Castle.
Din's Fire is the one spell the main quest asks for. At the Shadow Temple's entrance, a ring of torches has to be lit at once, and HaskieGaming warns not to try with Fire Arrows or Deku Sticks: Din's Fire lights them all and opens the door. It also lights torches in other dungeons and clears groups of enemies.
Zora's Fountain: Farore's Wind
Farore's Wind comes from the Great Fairy at Zora's Fountain, in "the lower right corner of the map where the hidden fairy fountain is", as IGN's Gold Skulltula guide of Oct 8, 2026 puts it while visiting the same corner. TheGamer places the bombable wall in the southeast of the fountain and says she can be visited as either young or adult Link.
The spell is a warp inside dungeons: cast it once to leave a warp point, and cast it again to return there. Zelda Dungeon's walkthrough uses it in the Water Temple beside one of the three places where Zelda's Lullaby changes the water level, "so we can return to this water level changing area really quickly", which spares the long walk back each time.
Death Mountain Crater: double magic
The Great Fairy of Wisdom in Death Mountain Crater doubles the Magic Meter. Adult Link reaches her from Goron City through Darunia's room and smashes the rocks beside the path with the Megaton Hammer, the Fire Temple's item (TheGamer, GameWith). She is optional, but the bigger meter pays off at the end: in HaskieGaming's guide to Ganon's Castle, every trial ends with a Light Arrow, and he hunts for magic in jars because he has "the short Magic Bar" and "didn't get the upgraded Magic Bar".
Desert Colossus: Nayru's Love
Nayru's Love, from the Great Fairy at the Desert Colossus, puts a protective barrier around Link for a short time. Zelda Dungeon's walkthrough suggests it in the final fight for players short on health, since it makes Link invincible for a while, though he still gets knocked over. TheGamer adds that it lessens Ganon's attacks without making Link impervious to them. Her fountain is behind a cracked wall near the Colossus entrance, between palm trees; bomb it. Most players arrive there on the way to the Spirit Temple, so PGReviews notes that the spell comes "right before the last Temple".
Outside Ganon's Castle: double defense
The last Great Fairy, the Great Fairy of Courage, waits behind a huge pillar just outside Ganon's Castle. Link lifts the pillar with the Golden Gauntlets, which are inside the castle, in the Shadow barrier's trial. Zelda Dungeon's walkthrough shows the whole visit: the "Great Fairy's Fountain" title, the lullaby, the Great Fairy rising from the water, and her message that Link's defensive power has been enhanced, so enemies do half damage. TheGamer calls it "effectively doubling his overall health" for the final fights, which makes her worth the walk back outside before the climb to Ganondorf. Hearts and how defense multiplies them are on Heart Containers.
The fountains and their music
Every Great Fairy's Fountain looks and sounds the same: a starry cave, a pool, a Triforce mark and the Great Fairy's Fountain theme. In Liam Triforce's study of Koji Kondo's music for the game, the fountains "use a harp to reflect their elegance accompanied by these starry visuals", and he still calls them his favorite fairy fountains in the series. Liam Triforce notes that the same piece plays on the file select screen.
In Ocarina of Time 3D and the remake
Ocarina of Time 3D kept all six fountains and added hints for them: its Sheikah Stones, in Link's house and the Temple of Time, show hint videos, and as KCTries' comparison of the versions notes, they also hint "how to get certain items you wouldn't randomly come by, for example the great fairy spells".
For the Nintendo Switch 2 remake, Nintendo has not shown or described the Great Fairies, as of Oct 20, 2026. IGN, studying the footage of Sep 8, 2026, saw a redesigned item screen with "three hexagonal shapes that look perfect for the spells you earn from fairy fountains". It also noticed that the Magic Meter at the top left is now split into visible sections, which may mean spells show their cost; Nintendo has not explained it. Whether the fountains, their gifts or their places change is not known until Nov 5, 2026.

Dodongo's CavernDodongo's Cavern is the second dungeon of Ocarina of Time, on Death Mountain Trail, cleared by child Link after Darunia gives him the Goron's Bracelet; its item is the Bomb Bag, its boss is King Dodongo, beaten with bombs thrown into his mouth, and it rewards a Heart Container and the Goron's Ruby. -
Items and equipmentOcarina of Time has 24 slots of items (from the Deku Stick and Fairy Slingshot to the Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, three magic spells and four Bottles) plus equipment: four swords, three shields, three tunics, three pairs of boots and upgrades for bags, wallets, strength and diving. Most main items come from dungeons; the Nintendo Switch 2 remake adds quick item switching and an item slot on ZR. -
Side quests, masks and minigamesOcarina of Time's main side quests are the Happy Mask Shop's mask sales (ending in the Mask of Truth), winning Epona from Ingo, the six Great Fairy Fountains, ten Big Poes for a Bottle, ten Magic Beans, the Fishing Pond, Dampé's gravedigging and race, and the minigames of Castle Town, Kakariko, the Lost Woods and Gerudo's Fortress. The Nintendo Switch 2 remake adds masks unlocked by new Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo in 2027.

Ganon's CastleGanon's Castle is the final dungeon of Ocarina of Time: after all six medallions, the Sages build a rainbow bridge to it, Link breaks six barriers with Light Arrows (finding the Golden Gauntlets on the way), climbs the tower to fight Ganondorf, escapes the collapsing castle with Zelda, and defeats Ganon with the Master Sword.
-
Shadow TempleThe Shadow Temple is the dungeon under the Kakariko Village Graveyard, reached with the Nocturne of Shadow and opened with Din's Fire; adult Link needs the Lens of Truth to see its hidden walls and floors, finds the Hover Boots after the mini-boss Dead Hand, rides a ghost ship, and fights Bongo Bongo.
