Biggoron's Sword and trading quests
Biggoron's Sword, the strongest sword in Ocarina of Time, is the prize of the adult trading sequence: Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco, Cojiro, Odd Mushroom, Odd Potion, Poacher's Saw, Broken Goron's Sword, Prescription, Eyeball Frog, World's Finest Eye Drops and Claim Check, then three days' wait. It does twice the Master Sword's damage and never breaks, but takes both hands, so Link cannot use a shield.
Biggoron's Sword is the strongest sword in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the reward for its longest side quest: an adult-era trading sequence of eleven items, passed from one character to the next across Hyrule, ending with a Claim Check and a three-day wait on top of Death Mountain. IGN's Nintendo 64 guide (Sep 9, 2026) recommends having Epona and at least 30 Gold Skulltula Tokens (for the Giant's Wallet) before you start. The sword is two-handed, does twice the Master Sword's damage and never breaks. Nintendo has not said whether the Nintendo Switch 2 remake (Nov 5, 2026) changes the sequence, as of Oct 14, 2026; this guide follows the original.

The Giant's Knife first
Before the trade, there is a cheaper version. Blow open the walls on Goron City's second level and you find Medigoron, a giant Goron who sells the Giant's Knife for 200 Rupees. In Zelda Dungeon's Nintendo 64 guide (Oct 20, 2009) it is the same kind of blade, "twice as much damage as the master sword" and no shield, but with a catch: after a few swings it shatters, leaving the broken knife, and buying another only breaks again. The trading sequence is how to get a sword that lasts.
The trading sequence, step by step
The sequence starts in Kakariko Village with the Cucco Lady, who has bred a new kind of bird. She gives adult Link the Pocket Egg, which hatches into the Pocket Cucco after a night passes (the Sun's Song speeds it up). Show the Cucco to Talon, asleep in the house near the center of town, to startle him awake; then return to the Cucco Lady, who swaps it for Cojiro, the blue Cucco that belonged to her brother. Take Cojiro into the Lost Woods, first left, to the man sitting by the tall log.
| Step | Item | Get it from | Take it to | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pocket Egg | Cucco Lady, Kakariko | Hatch it overnight | None |
| 2 | Pocket Cucco | The hatched egg | Wake Talon, then back to the Cucco Lady | None |
| 3 | Cojiro | Cucco Lady | The man in the Lost Woods | None |
| 4 | Odd Mushroom | The man in the Lost Woods | Granny, Kakariko Potion Shop | 3 minutes |
| 5 | Odd Potion (Odd Poultice on 3DS) | Granny | The Lost Woods (a Kokiri girl takes it) | None |
| 6 | Poacher's Saw | The Kokiri girl | Master craftsman, Gerudo Valley | None |
| 7 | Broken Goron's Sword | The craftsman | Biggoron, Death Mountain's peak | None |
| 8 | Prescription | Biggoron | King Zora, Zora's Domain | None |
| 9 | Eyeball Frog | King Zora | Lake Scientist, Lake Hylia | 3 minutes |
| 10 | World's Finest Eye Drops | Lake Scientist | Biggoron | 4 minutes |
| 11 | Claim Check | Biggoron | Biggoron, three days later | None |
The Odd Mushroom is the first timed item: three minutes to reach the Potion Shop in Kakariko. IGN's advice: take the Magic Bean shortcut out of the Lost Woods if you planted one as a child, ride Epona across Hyrule Field, play the Sun's Song before entering Kakariko if it is night, and go in through the back of the shop. Warp songs are no help: playing one, such as the Nocturne of Shadow, cancels the timer and fails the step.
HaskieGaming's guide (Mar 3, 2026) explains what happens if you try: the moment a warp finishes, the item spoils. He also treats Epona as required in practice, since making the timers without her takes speedrunner tricks.
Granny turns the mushroom into the Odd Potion, which has no timer; the Minuet of Forest is fine here. Back in the Lost Woods, the man is gone and a Kokiri girl takes the potion instead, giving Link the Poacher's Saw. Carry it to Gerudo Valley, jumping the broken bridge on Epona (the Longshot also gets across), and show it to the master craftsman in front of the carpenters' tent: he hands over the Broken Goron's Sword. Take that to Biggoron on Death Mountain's peak.
One warning before taking the saw. HaskieGaming warns of a bug: if Link picks up the Poacher's Saw without one of the two Deku Nut capacity upgrades, that upgrade becomes permanently unavailable, which ruins a 100% file. He believes it affects every version except Ocarina of Time 3D. Collect both upgrades first. Nintendo has not said how the remake handles it.
Biggoron agrees to trade if Link fetches eye drops, and writes a Prescription for King Zora, who is frozen in red ice in the frozen Zora's Domain. Thaw him with Blue Fire, from the Ice Cavern or bought in Kakariko for 300 Rupees (which needs the Giant's Wallet). He gives the Eyeball Frog, which has three minutes to reach the Lake Scientist in Lake Hylia's laboratory, on Epona, since warps fail again. The scientist makes the World's Finest Eye Drops, and they have four minutes to reach Biggoron.
Racing the eye drops and the Claim Check
The eye drops are the tightest leg: from Lake Hylia to the top of Death Mountain in four minutes. IGN rides Epona to Kakariko, climbs Death Mountain Trail, and uses the Magic Bean plant outside Dodongo's Cavern, if one was planted as a child, to skip a long part of the climb. Biggoron uses the drops at once and gives Link the Claim Check, and the sword takes three full in-game days to forge. Wait on the peak and play the Sun's Song to pass the time, then show him the Claim Check for Biggoron's Sword.
What Biggoron's Sword does
Biggoron's Sword deals twice the Master Sword's damage. HaskieGaming gives the numbers: the Master Sword does 2 damage a swing, Biggoron's Sword 4, and a jump slash with it 8, enough to beat many enemies in one hit. It never breaks. The cost is defense: it takes both hands, so Link cannot raise a shield while it is equipped.
It is the best sword for most fights, but not the last blow. Only the Master Sword can finish Ganon, as Zelda Dungeon's boss guide (Feb 26, 2010) notes when Ganon knocks the Master Sword away at the start of the fight; until Link recovers it, Biggoron's Sword is a good stand-in. IGN got the sword before even entering the Forest Temple, so it can be had early in the adult era. The fight is on Ganon's Castle and every sword on Items and equipment.
Epona is the key to the timed steps, and the remake keeps her. In Nintendo's Sep 8, 2026 demonstration of the Nintendo Switch 2 version, Eiji Aonuma plays Epona's Song and a horse comes running: "Link can ride a horse as an adult." Nintendo has not shown the trading sequence itself as of Oct 14, 2026.
The child trading sequence
Young Link has a shorter chain, which leads into the masks. Malon gives him the Weird Egg, which hatches into a Cucco used to wake Talon at Hyrule Castle; Princess Zelda then gives him Zelda's Letter. Show the letter to the guard at Kakariko's Death Mountain gate and the Happy Mask Shop opens in Castle Town. From there Link borrows masks and sells them to characters around Hyrule (the Keaton Mask, Skull Mask, Spooky Mask and Bunny Hood); after selling four, the shop lends the Mask of Truth, and the Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks become available. All of it is on Side quests, masks and minigames.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get Biggoron's Sword in Ocarina of Time? In Ocarina of Time, adult Link completes the trading sequence that starts with the Cucco Lady's Pocket Egg in Kakariko Village and ends with the World's Finest Eye Drops delivered to Biggoron on Death Mountain; Biggoron gives a Claim Check and forges the sword in three in-game days.
What is the trading sequence order in Ocarina of Time? Ocarina of Time's adult trading sequence goes Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco, Cojiro, Odd Mushroom, Odd Potion, Poacher's Saw, Broken Goron's Sword, Prescription, Eyeball Frog, World's Finest Eye Drops and Claim Check.
Is Biggoron's Sword better than the Master Sword? Biggoron's Sword does twice the Master Sword's damage in Ocarina of Time and never breaks, but it is two-handed, so Link cannot use a shield with it, and only the Master Sword can deal the final blow to Ganon.
What is the difference between the Giant's Knife and Biggoron's Sword? In Ocarina of Time, Medigoron's Giant's Knife (200 Rupees) is a two-handed blade that breaks after a few swings, while Biggoron's Sword, from the trading sequence, hits as hard and never breaks.
Can you use warp songs during the trading sequence in Ocarina of Time? No: in Ocarina of Time, warping with an ocarina song spoils a timed trade item (the Odd Mushroom, the Eyeball Frog or the Eye Drops), so ride Epona instead.
Where is Cojiro in Ocarina of Time? In Ocarina of Time, Cojiro is the blue Cucco the Cucco Lady in Kakariko Village gives adult Link in exchange for the Pocket Cucco, after Link wakes Talon; take it to the man in the Lost Woods.
How long does the Claim Check take in Ocarina of Time? Biggoron needs three full in-game days in Ocarina of Time after he takes the eye drops; waiting on the peak and playing the Sun's Song speeds it up.

The original is the only game with a Metascore of 99 and holds Guinness World Records' title of the most critically acclaimed videogame ever. -
Epona and Lon Lon RanchTo get Epona in Ocarina of Time, learn Epona's Song from Malon at Lon Lon Ranch as a child, then return as an adult, play it to call Epona, beat Ingo in two horse races and jump the ranch fence to escape; from then on Epona's Song calls her in Hyrule Field. The Nintendo Switch 2 remake keeps Epona and the song, as Nintendo showed on Sep 8, 2026. -
Ganon's CastleGanon's Castle is the final dungeon of Ocarina of Time: after all six medallions, the Sages build a rainbow bridge to it, Link breaks six barriers with Light Arrows (finding the Golden Gauntlets on the way), climbs the tower to fight Ganondorf, escapes the collapsing castle with Zelda, and defeats Ganon with the Master Sword.

Items and equipmentOcarina of Time has 24 slots of items (from the Deku Stick and Fairy Slingshot to the Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, three magic spells and four Bottles) plus equipment: four swords, three shields, three tunics, three pairs of boots and upgrades for bags, wallets, strength and diving. Most main items come from dungeons; the Nintendo Switch 2 remake adds quick item switching and an item slot on ZR. -
Side quests, masks and minigamesOcarina of Time's main side quests are the Happy Mask Shop's mask sales (ending in the Mask of Truth), winning Epona from Ingo, the six Great Fairy Fountains, ten Big Poes for a Bottle, ten Magic Beans, the Fishing Pond, Dampé's gravedigging and race, and the minigames of Castle Town, Kakariko, the Lost Woods and Gerudo's Fortress. The Nintendo Switch 2 remake adds masks unlocked by new Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo in 2027.

Great Fairy FountainsOcarina of Time has six Great Fairy Fountains. Three Great Fairies teach spells (Din's Fire at Hyrule Castle, Farore's Wind at Zora's Fountain, Nayru's Love at the Desert Colossus), and three give upgrades (the Magic Meter and Spin Attack on Death Mountain Trail, double magic in Death Mountain Crater, double defense outside Ganon's Castle). Each is behind a hidden entrance and appears when Link plays Zelda's Lullaby.
